How High is Your Property Tax?

Brookings Institute, a well known Washington think tank, has published an interactive  map on the web (HERE) which lets you roll your mouse over any county in the United States and see the average home value, average property tax and average ratio of taxes to values, along with how the county ranks nationally.  New York County — better known as Manhattan or New York NY (usually zips starting with 100) — is second in average home  value at $842,300,  22nd in taxes at $6,189 but is ranked 1,951st for average ratio of taxes to home value at 0.73%.   Compare that to Shannon County South Dakota which ranks first in taxes as a proportion of home value at 4.2%. Before you wonder how they manage, the average tax paid is $705. and the average home value is $16,800, ranked 3,142.
